I was reminded last night just how much I enjoy eating alone and with conscious intent. It is so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life that I often forget just how enlightening this experience is.
It is true that any kind of solitude can be spiritually beneficial yet I find eating alone, eating consciously and with appreciation, a real opportunity to personal growth -both spiritually and for one’s health and healing. When we eat in a rushed way, mindless of each mouthful, distracted by television or on our computers, we are not adding our own conscious intent, our minds are elsewhere and our digestive system is distracted.
Although natural, whole foods are very important, more essential and life enhancing is the way we eat. Through this meditative mode of eating, we are enhancing the food value many times, staying present in the moment, and helping to control the amount of food eaten at a meal.
I know this to be true because that is what I experienced last night. Eating outside, alone, in silence I was able to fully focus on my food, honoring it, eating slowly, and paying attention to the taste, aroma and appearance. They say you are what you eat… I’d like to add to that you are how you eat. The food you eat will become you, your thoughts, your creativity and your life force.
I say give it a try. Maybe at first you just to try eating without distractions or take your lunch outside away from the computer and enjoy it by yourself. Experiment with how this feels, explore the possibilities of conscious eating. Now, don’t get me wrong I am very much looking forward to dinner with my husband tonight but you bet I will be eating alone much more often.
Please share your thoughts on eating alone. Do you go to restaurants alone? Do you sit at a table or the bar? Do you bring something to read?
